I'm getting the symbol in the Notification Bar that states:
"Application data space is low. To free space 1. go to Mail..."
And then I can't read anymore, my phone runs out of screen room & the message doesn't scroll.
What is the rest of this message?!
I have most settings to cache to SDCard,
Moved several Apps to SDCard,
AND have 473Mb of space left.
WTF!!!!!

This is sort of a known bug.  The "Low Memory" does not have to be overall internal memory but can be memory allocated to specific applications running out of what it is allowed.  The one that seems to get hit most is "com.htc.socialnetwork.provider".  I just noticed on mine that the data was 32M and I don't even use facebook or anything like that.

Anyway, go into Settings > Applications > running applications and look for "com.htc.socialnetwork.provider" and clear the data and see if that helps.

Also, you may have a lot of e-mail that even though it is going to other storage tends to eat system resources so you may want to change the receive limits so you have less on the phone.  For example if you have download all of messages try changing it to a lower number.

Let us know how you make out

Ugh!
I had 50Mb tied up in that!
So far, so good.
Thank You!
You said:

For future reference, are there others that "get hit" often enough for me to keep eyes on it?
Any further insight would be fantastic.
Again,THANK YOU!

Also, does anyone know the rest of that message?
"...go to Mail..." And what, clear the cache? change Settings? Email Google & complain?
I'm very curious.

I think it ends with "... and check your settings" or something like that

Anyway, one suggestion is to make sure temp for attachments are on the SD card and that you have a limit for the initial download size.

A couple of others:

Dialer - could be hit by long list of history
Internet - cached web pages

If you have a lot of e-mail or messages you can clean them up periodically.

It's back!
This is F***ing ridiculous.
I've gone through every app in Settings>Applications>All and made sure its not overloaded.
Mail is only cacheing 3 days of e-mails, all to SD Card.
I don't know what to do.
I got the Incredible day 1 on April 29th & haven't had any problems I couldn't fix.
Somebody, anybody... HELP!!!
(nils, you were awesome, any other sage advice?)

I had this problem repeatedly, even recurring a week or so after a factory reset. Currently I have a new phone for an unrelated problem, but i do have a plan if this problem recurs. That plan is to transfer the internal storage date to the desktop, then use the phone utility to reformat the internal storage. Then transfer the data back, perusing first for any obvious junk files of extraordinary size. This is what I will do unless you try it first and tell me it doesn't work.......   :-)

posted this in another thread:

i got this message over the weekend and it took awhile to figure out how to clear it. i started by moving apps over to the sd card but that didn't fix it. so i started clearing the data out of individual apps until the message was removed. my suggestion is to go to settings -> applications -> manage applications and then click on individual apps and clear the data within the app. once i did this for several apps i no longer had any issues.

I also have been having that message pop up lately. Guy at VZ store told me it was too many apps. Tried to delete apps I wasn't using but that didn't help.

As suggested here, what did seem to help [fingers crossed] is to go into Settings > Applications > manage applications and then to go app by app and "clear data" for those I knew I didn't need. Message went away as I was doing it. Some apps were preinstalled, not uninstallable and never used - except maybe at the beginning just to see what they were about.

Here's hoping.

Where is there a good explanation about storage & memory on the DI?

There is a bug that causes this error, but since 3 big companies are involved, none of them are going to fix it any time soon. Basically, app space is limited to some arbitrary amount and is not equal to the space available on your phone. Lucky for us, there is a workaround. Touch the notification for "app data space is low." Wait until everything settles down. The biggest data hog apps filter their way to the top. If they don't, hit menu>sort by size. If you see any apps near the top of the list that you rarely use, uninstall those (move to sd doesn't seem to help). You can always download them again. Clobber a couple big apps and this issue will go away.

If you don't want to re-download the apps, or suspect that they might be removed from the market, there are many app backup apps. (lol) I like SystemPanel. You can archive apps to the memory card. Then you can re-install them without using market. Another use for this feature (My favorite) is to archive apps that like to run in the background.

aCCleaner can clear all your caches in one step:

If I find a way to boost the app space limit, I'll post a follow up.

Clearing the memory cache on the facebook app cured the problem I was having. Thank you for the helpfull tip. I had to provide my e-mail & password the next time I launched the application but it has worked well.

Try uninstalling Firefox. Worked for me. HTC mail app is also a hog, switch to MailDroid or K-9. Clearing cache of FB, email, etc helps too.

I recently started getting this error as well.  I tracked it down to a single application as the primary culprit which was taking up about 60-70% of the used space: Pocket Casts.  Apparently it caches the currently playing podcast into the application data space, even while paused or in the background.
