I'm just wondering if anyone else gets these messages (almost daily) stating that there is a system update available and you just have to install it.  Anytime I click to install it, it says it is "rebooting now," (mind you it never does) and that's it.  If you close it out and check the 'about phone' menu it will say your system is up to date(although nothing happened.)  Also, it will repeat in a day or two.

I'm just curious if this happens to others as well, or if someone figured out how to stop it.

It could be referring to market updates.  Check there

I have this same behavior as well, but mine clearly said "HTC Incredible 2.3.4 system update".  I am currently running 2.2.

Mine updated this morning to 2.3.4. What can I expect to be different about this version?

Mine did too, Dennis. So far, the only difference I see is the clock flips the numbers over differently.

Got the same message.  Phone rebooted, but came back up with same version. Here is Verizon's announcement:

http://support.verizonwireless.com/system_update/htc_incredible.html

"Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update, Software Version:
Build Number: 4.08.605.2; Baseband Version: 2.15.10.07.07, for your Droid Incredible.
This update provides several improvements for your device."

Like I said, my build number did not change after the boot.

I just did the 4.08 update last night and am quite unhappy. Everything "works" but they changed features that I used frequently and made things more difficult. I am wishing that I never updated because I probably don't need anything the new update brings anyway and I was happy with the old software. I just figured hey new update ok I'll get it, thinking it would be something good but I was wrong.

What I am upset about the most is they took away the full menu when you press the power button leaving only a few power options for turning off or resetting the phone. Where are all the shortcuts now for setting the phone to silent or vibrate and connecting to the internet? Now I have to go into settings every time and manually click these which is so annoying if I just wanted to do it quick.

The volume key also makes a horrid tone now when changing volume levels which I wish I could disable but can't find anywhere to do that.

Why do they have to change things that aren't broken to make them worse?

Just got this notice again today, but this time the phone did not install anything or reboot.  Apparently, VZW is having problems with the GB update and this is their second attempt (build) at getting it out there.

I have the same problem: I keep getting notices, tells me its going to reboot, then nothing happens. Ifanyoje finds out how to fix this, or if Verizon fixes it, please let us know!  Huh

I kept getting the same error, but followed the following steps and it finally installed!  I don't see much of any difference - EXCEPT - it fixed my text messaging glitch.

Here is the link to the solution:

NOTE:  follow it exactly!  It does work.

Forgot to mention that I did NOT install app2sd.  I manually moved all the programs I could to my SD and then manually cleared the cache from all programs that I could.

As long as you do that then you can start here:
Then booted into HBOOT and deleted all cache from the phone (this does not delete any files/settings off of your phone) directions are from user giskard from androidcentral forums

1.Boot into recovery
•Press and hold Power, Choose "Restart" option
•When screen turns off, press and hold Volume Down and Power
•When the white HBOOT screen appears, use the volume button to move down to “RECOVERY.”
2.Press the Power button to select “RECOVERY.”
3.When the triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at the same time.
4.Using the volume button, scroll down to “Wipe cache partition” and select it.
5.Select "Reboot system now"
After the phone comes back up go into your phone dialer and checkin with google and dial *#*#2432546#*#* the numbers will dissapear it means it worked.

Next I went into Settings - Date&Time uncheck use automatic provided values and set the date to one month in future (by default your phone checks every 14 days for an update from what I read, this forces it to check again). Go back to settings and about phone and then system updates, it may say you are up to date, close out, give it another moment then go back, it eventually prompted again for the update

Echoed. Another successful application of this process just performed me. Huge thanks to the OP with succinct & thorough instructions.
